Fluoride in Drinking Water

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month.  One of the greatest advances in the fight against dental caries has been the fluoridation of community drinking water.

Experts agree that fluoridated water helps fight tooth decay. Indeed, fluoride can help reverse the demineralization process of tooth enamel. Cities throughout the United States, including Phoenix AZ, Glendale AZ and Peoria AZ, add fluoride to the water supply in order to deliver these benefits to the public. In today’s society, however, when bottled water and sports drinks often take precedence over water from the faucet, many question whether people still receive any benefit from fluoridated water.

Parents should know that, even if your child does not drink water from the faucet, he or she is still likely to receive fluoride from the faucet water used to prepare food. Indeed, fluoridated faucet water used to boil vegetables and pasta can still benefit the people who consume the food.  Boiling the fluoridated water does not remove the fluoride.

With that said, it is still important to bring your child to a pediatric dentist in order to have topical fluoride applied to his or her teeth. The fluoride applied in this manner is minimally passed into the body, and provides nearly all of its benefits locally on the teeth.

The optimal fluoridation level in community water ranges from 0.7 mg/L to 1.2 mg/L. You can click here to visit the Department of Health and Human Services and look up the fluoride content in your local Arizona community water.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

We want to wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day! Without offending cupid, we also want to remind everyone that they should give their teeth a Valentine’s Day gift this year by protecting against the damage that can result from indulging in all the sugary treats that cupid has to offer.

While those classic Valentine’s Day heart candies are sweet to the palette and the heart, they are not as kind to your teeth. The sugar in these candies feed the bacteria in your mouth, which causes cavities.

If you cannot resist these sugary temptations, then Dr. Ray and Dr. Shari recommend that you brush your teeth shortly afterwards. Limiting the time that sugar remains in contact with teeth can help mitigate the undesirable effects discussed above.

On behalf of everyone at Solomon Pediatric Dental, we hope to see you and your child soon at our Glendale pediatric dentist office.
